20 Efficient Spring-Cleaning Tips: Do's and Don'ts for a Spotless Home

With spring making its anticipated and inevitable comeback this year, it signifies life, youth, and the return of vitality, as described by Morris Bishop in his poem “Il Primavera”. For some of us, it signals the time to clean house which has become a tradition for most of us. Decluttering, dusting, and letting go of items we no longer need can be deeply refreshing. This season offers the perfect opportunity to embrace a cleaner, more organized space and simplify our lives by parting with things that no longer serve us.

For many individuals, hiring a maid service is the ideal solution for tackling the daunting task of spring cleaning. Whether due to busy work schedules, a disability or injury, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of chores, or preparing for the arrival of a new family member. There are plenty of reasons why some of us may not be able to manage such physical tasks around the house. A professional cleaning service can efficiently provide the support needed to refresh your home without the added stress.

According to the American Cleaning Institute, an astounding 80% of Americans spring clean annually, which is a significant 10% increase from just 3 years ago. This goes to show that cleanliness has never been more important to the American household.

What makes spring-cleaning so important?

Spring cleaning is a great way to improve both your mental and physical health, increase productivity and it makes you feel accomplished and good about yourself. Furthermore, it’s an opportunity to get to any areas that have been building up or tackle projects that you can’t during colder months.

Why spring of all seasons?

It all comes full circle to the theme of new beginnings. Spring has always represented a fresh start, and many of us find it to be the ideal moment to shed the clutter that weighs us down - whether in our lives, our closets, or our homes in general.

Throughout winter, we eagerly anticipate the warmth of spring and promise ourselves that we will tackle our cleaning tasks once the season arrives. However, as the excitement wanes, so can our motivation to clean. Many of us find ourselves unsure of where to begin, what tasks to prioritize, and what strategies to employ.

So, for those on a tight budget, for anyone who might be overwhelmed and may not know where to start, or individuals who prefer a hands-on approach (like me, who believes that things aren't truly done right until I take care of them myself), I’ve turned to our team of experts and compiled a list of 20 essential do's and don'ts to help you navigate this year’s spring cleaning more efficiently - and with confidence. You’ve got this!

10 Spring Cleaning Do’s

check for expired products

1. Expired products

It's common for many of us to overlook the expiration date listed on the items in our homes. Certain products aren’t used all that frequently, making it very easy to overlook. Take this time to go through the contents of your kitchen and bathroom(s) and check to see if there are items that need replacing or to be thrown away altogether. Just know, if you have items in your home from the early 2000's, you’re not alone.

refresh your closet

2. Closet refresh

Being a high traffic area, but an area that’s often overlooked, it's essential to prioritize the cleanliness of our closets - at least once in a while. Purge - get rid of anything you don’t like/wear or items that no longer fit. What can be donated? What’s garbage? Then, in this order: high/low dusting (cobwebs, baseboards), wipe down any surfaces and move items off the floor to do a thorough vacuuming/mopping of the space.

clean doors and trims

3. Doors & trim need love too

Although cleaning them may require some effort (and perhaps you having to get down on your hands/knees), these areas tend to be the most built up given how infrequently they are cleaned. Work top to bottom. Dust first, then wash/dry. Use dish soap and water or a multi-surface that you like. Magic erasers, sponges, brushes, rags - it all works/helps. You may not realize just how much these areas have built up, but you’ll be shocked when you see that transformation.

clen dryer vents and lint traps periodically

4. Dryer vents & lint traps

It’s essential to pay attention not only to the lint trap but also to the vent that leads outside your home. I know you’ve seen the videos posted online showcasing the alarming amount of lint and debris found inside air vents after several years - some haven’t been touched in decades. DECADES! As oddly satisfying as they are to watch, we shouldn't wait too long to have them cleaned. Neglected vents can pose a serious fire risk, so be sure to have your vents cleaned annually. Fortunately, there are professionals that are equipped with specialized tools that can help you. It may come at a cost, but it’s a small price to pay compared to the devastating loss of your home due to a fire caused by uncleaned vents.

maintain HVAC/Air purifier filters

5. HVAC/Air purifier filters

The US Dept. of Energy recommends cleaning/replacing your filters every 1-2 months. Regular maintenance not only reduces dust accumulation but also enhances indoor air quality, thereby alleviating allergy symptoms and respiratory problems. Ensure your system is working as it should - efficiently, without strain - which means less energy consumption and money saved for you - it’s a win-win!

clean under the appliances and furniture

6. Underneath/behind matters

Think appliances and furniture. How easy is it for us to do our day-to-day or week-to-week cleaning and just focus on what’s right in front of us, and ignore those out-of-sight and out-of-mind areas? Well, I’m here to tell you, those areas need love too. Even more so than the high traffic areas you touch on the regular. Pet hair, dirt, debris, a missing toy, spatula, or sock. Or worse - a dead rodent. We’ve seen it all. Move the things, because your attention is required. It’s time.

use the right vacuum attachment when spring cleaning

7. Vacuum efficiency

Modern vacuums are equipped with a variety of attachments and settings designed to enhance their versatility. To achieve optimal results, it's essential to select the right setting and attachment for each specific task, especially in irregular or hard-to-reach areas. This approach will ensure maximum efficiency and thorough cleaning. Be sure to perform regular maintenance (filters, hose, beater bar, etc.) so your machine is clean and functions as it should.

clean your garbage bins

8. Clean your bins

There are numerous reasons to keep up on your garbage and recycling bins, but just to name a few - this will help prevent unpleasant odors and avoid rodent/ pest infestations - both of which are undesirable in any home. This practice promotes hygiene and helps prevent illnesses. Warmer weather is approaching, so it’s the perfect time to take those bins outside for cleaning! Just spray, scrub, rinse and flip them over to air dry.

always clean from top to bottom

9. Clean from top to bottom

We say this on repeat, because it’s so important! This method allows you to work systematically, minimizing the need to repeat tasks - making your cleaning routine more efficient and effective. If you’ve cleaned your floors and then spot a dusty fixture - cleaning that fixture after the fact will inevitably leave you with a mess on the floor. The floor you just cleaned. Avoid creating more work for yourself. Save time. Save your energy. High to low, always - it’s the only way.

manage time efficiently

10. Time is precious - be efficient

Come up with a game plan - it offers a multitude of benefits. Not only will it help to boost productivity, it will also help to reduce stress and yield better results. When you employ effective/ efficient cleaning techniques, you will be able to cover more ground in less time. Tips: always work from high-to-low, moving clockwise around a room. Dry then wet. Allow products to do the work - spray/soak and come back to it. Use the right tools for the job - tools really help with efficiency.

10 Spring Cleaning Don’ts

do not skip out of sight areas

1. Skip out-of-sight areas

This is a common occurrence that we see often. It’s easy to forget about or overlook areas that aren’t in your face, demanding your attention. However, out-of-sight/out-of-mind areas can’t be ignored forever and do require cleaning, even if it’s on a far less frequent basis (compared to your high-traffic areas). Minimum 4x a year, be sure to pull out all furniture and appliances to clean underneath - you never know what you will find.

dry dusting is not enough

2. Dry dust only - NO BUENO

A quick dusting can go a long way, but some areas require a bit more attention. For instance, light fixtures often need to be disassembled and hand-washed to effectively remove all of the grease and grime that has built up over time. Same with baseboards - dry dusting will only get you so far. They need to be washed periodically. Using a damp cloth and/or a product of your choice when you’re dusting will better trap particles and it’ll also limit what is being spread around your home. This is especially important to remember when it comes to post-construction dust. The more you are dry dusting, sweeping vs. vacuuming, etc., the more you are putting into the air and the more dust you will have re-settling after the fact. Damp > Dry.

wash your curtains

3. Avoid washing your curtains

I don't know who needs to hear this, but it's time to give your curtains a good wash! It's essential to remember that curtains are fabric that can (and DO) harbor dust, pet hair, pollen, dirt, and other airborne particles. This can lead to unpleasant odors and stale air quality, not to mention dimming the brightness of your space by causing the fabric to appear darker over time. They can be dusted and/or vacuumed in between, but make sure to wash!

disinfect your fridge and other appliances

4. Skip disinfecting the fridge

When it comes to maintaining a clean fridge, simply wiping away spills or crumbs isn't enough; disinfecting periodically is crucial. This is especially important since your fridge stores the food you/your family consume. There are numerous disinfectants available in stores and online for you to choose from, but if you are someone that is sensitive to certain products, you are seeking are more natural approach, etc., there are plenty of alternatives to consider that will work just as well! Baking soda, lemon juice, white vinegar, a mixture of olive oil and lemon, or tea tree oil - just to name a few. These natural options pack a punch and will get you the results you’re looking for - and you’ll likely have them on hand already.

proper appliance maintenance

5. Neglect certain appliances

While they may seem less important or less of a priority compared to the oven, fridge and microwave - keeping up with your washer/dryer and dish washer is equally important, as those appliances are used just as often. Regular maintenance is essential to keep them clean and sanitized. It’ll also help ensure your appliances are functioning optimally/as they should. Neglecting their upkeep can result in mold, unpleasant odors, an increase in energy consumption and a shorter lifespan for your appliances.

do not misuse toilet bowl cleaners

6. Misuse toilet bowl cleaners

Toilet bowl cleaners often contain strong acids and alkalis, making these products extremely corrosive. They are formulated to dissolve mineral deposits and stains. Due to their harsh properties, you can cause irreversible damage when you use them elsewhere in your home. It's essential to use toilet bowl cleaners strictly for their intended purpose - despite the videos you may see people post online.

Don’t risk it!

clean your cleaning tools

7. Skip cleaning your tools

Ensure optimal performance and a better end result by keeping tools and equipment clean. Make sure you wash vacuum attachments, canisters, and filters often to preserve suction power and avoid unpleasant odors. Replace sponges/brushes as needed. They can also be soaked in vinegar, brushes can be put in the dishwasher, and sponges can be microwaved to kill bacteria. Soak them first to create steam and avoid risk of fire. Just be sure there’s no metallic content.

create a technique or game plan when spring cleaning

8. Wing it

Like many other tasks, having a game plan will get you a lot further. When it comes to cleaning, decluttering and organizing your space, the same rule applies. What is it that you’re hoping to accomplish? Set realistic goals for yourself. Start a project you know can be completed in the time you have to spend. Don’t tackle too much at once as that leads to overwhelm. Prioritize what needs your attention first/most. This approach will make difficult tasks more manageable and less stressful.

hoarding and clutter

9. Hold onto everything

Holding onto unnecessary items is detrimental for many reasons. Clutter and disorganization can pose health risks as these items accumulate dust, mold, and pests that can potentially lead to respiratory issues and other health problems. Hoarding is linked to emotional and/or mental distress, resulting in feelings of shame, which can lead to isolation. Decluttering will lead to a healthier, more organized, and fulfilling life as it fosters mental clarity, enhances relationships, and creates a safer living environment.

decide whether to keep, donate, sell

10. Overwhelm yourself

Bite sized pieces - break it down by level, room or category. Focusing on one area at a time helps you to build momentum, enhances efficiency, and reduces physical exhaustion. When you attempt to tackle multiple things at once, you’re far more likely to get distracted and overwhelmed. Make piles first - keep, donate, garbage, sell. Work smarter, not harder. Declutter, then clean. Do things in a way that makes sense. Work top to bottom so you aren’t creating more work for yourself and know where you left off. Put things in labeled bins and boxes to make things easier to find, more organized and visually appealing. Group paperwork and documentation that is alike and don’t wait until you have an avalanche on your hands to file it. Do things in stages to avoid overwhelming yourself. One task or project at a time.

In Conclusion...

While these tips and tricks might be a helpful tool for an easier and more structured spring cleaning, we should remember that there is no such thing as one-size-fits-all. Trust your judgment on what areas require more attention and what can be simplified. Some spaces may need a thorough deep clean, while others could benefit from a simple decluttering.

Additionally, consider the emotional attachment to certain items; it’s okay to hold on to things that bring you joy or have sentimental value. Spring cleaning is not just about tidying up; it’s an opportunity to create a space that feels good to you. Put on some music, involve family members, or even turn it into a fun challenge. The goal is to create a harmonious environment that reflects your style and meets your needs, so be flexible and go at your own pace.

Ultimately, spring cleaning should leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, so embrace the process in a way that feels right for you and your home. And even if you don't achieve everything you hoped for, the journey itself can be comforting and inspiring enough to spark a new cleaning routine that you’ve never tried before.

If you’d rather not go at it alone or it’s too overwhelming for you to manage yourself, remember, you can always bring in the professionals. We’ll be there when you need us.

We wish you the best of luck, and happy spring cleaning!
